November 2023 Advocacy Event: Here's What You Missed...

The holidays are over, and interior designers in Wisconsin are back to work… Time passes quickly, and in anticipation of the regulations for Wisconsin Registered Interior Designers to have the ability to sign and stamp their own drawing documents for approval for application for building permit going into effect sometime this coming year, the ASID WI Advocacy Committee has great information to share! On November 9th, 2023, Wisconsin interior designers gathered to build knowledge and elevate the interior design profession. ASID Wisconsin, Wisconsin IIDA, CIDQ, lobbyists and consultants, The Firm, and Wisconsin advocacy champion Robin Stroebel, ASID, RID, LEED AP ID + C, WELL AP, presented advocacy updates at a local and national level. Katherine Setser, ASID, NCIDQ, IIDA, IDEC - Assistant Professor, Architecture + Interior Design, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, led discussions on professional ethics and the permitting process for interior design documents. Attendees left inspired, empowered and enthusiastic about their future in the interior design profession.

Takeaways from the “BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF KNOWLEDGE – FROM INTENTION TO ACTION” Event on November 9th, 2023:

  1. ASID, IIDA & CIDQ have formed the Consortium for Interior Design in pursuit of reasonable regulation of the interior design profession nationwide. The Consortium increases awareness of Professional Interior Designers and advocates for legislation.

  3. The State of Wisconsin A-E Examining Board consists of Architects, Landscape Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors, Designers, and now, Registered Interior Designers. The A-E Examining Board meets regularly to determine the continuing education, ethics, rules and regulations for Registered Interior Designers. Voting on the final rules and regulations is taking place before the end of the year. We expect to have the ability for Registered Interior Designers to submit interior alterations for permit approval by mid-2024!

  4. Buddy Julius and Ryan Murray, our legislative lobbyists from The Firm, shared how interior designers can advocate for their profession. Get to know your legislator, they want to hear from you! Tell them about the interior design profession and what the legislation means to you. Consider donating to their campaign, noting your thanks for their support of the interior design profession. Legislators serve 2-year terms. If not re-elected, a new legislator will take their place and the cycle will start again.
  5. Passing the NCIDQ and advancing to WRID prepares interior designers for generating construction drawing documents and submitting for permitting. Katherine Setser led designers through the step-by-step process - one that is easy to follow. She shared the public resources and code evaluation that Registered Interior Designers are using daily. Those help us communicate our knowledge and project intent for the permitting process - validating Registered Interior Designers as experts in the built environment of interior alterations.
